Customer Feedback

“I am very pleased with the work carried out by ESG & Railway Approvals on this project.
Their technical support in all areas of the project was excellent; coupled with the approachability and guidance from Railway Approvals Ltd obtaining the required certification.

The overhaul extension was achieved in a smooth and painless manner.”

Andy Hopkins, Overhaul & Planning Manager at Siemens Mobility

Customer Business Requirement:

For Siemens Class 333 the, then current, overhaul interval of 650,000 miles was targeted to provide ROSCOs & TOCs with a maintenance optimisation programme.

In order to maintain availability for the Operator by optimising the overhaul periodicity without compromising safety and reliability for the 333 fleet;

“There was a desire to extend the overhaul periodicity of the Class 333 fleet to 1 million miles.”

The programme required inspection, testing and component strip down to evaluate the condition of both the vehicles and the equipment fitted.

In addition, ESG fully scrutinised the vehicle overhaul instructions to ensure they covered the extended periodicity requirements.

Areas that were covered under the overhaul optimisation programme included:

  • bogies
  • underframe, and underframe equipment
  • suspensions
  • vehicle bodies
  • brake equipment
  • pantographs
  • doors

ESG delivered significant benefits

This programme was subjected to VAB scrutiny enabling the request for revised (extended) maintenance certificates to be issued.

The extension of improvement to the original 650,000 miles scheduled maintenance to 1 million miles allowed the TOC to enjoy the benefits of:

  • reduced vehicle downtime
  • improved reliability
  • Improved availability of vehicles
  • no compromise to safety
