CLASS 66 LOCOMOTIVES FOR OPERATION IN FRANCE
66022 and TGV!
Background
EWS International requires Class 66 locomotives for operation in France. The locomotives required extensive modification to fit mandatory French safety systems. ESG has carried out the design and management of this work, with installation work being carried out by EWS staff. In parallel with this work, a series of technical submissions have been made to the French authorities to demonstrate compliance to standards or equivalence, and technical authorisation was secured on 31-Aug-06.
Project Overview
In order to comply with French regulations and technical requirements, several new systems are being fitted, some of them safety related:
  • KVB
(A type of Automatic Train Protection)
  • BRS
(Akin to "AWS" in the UK)
  • DAAT
(Akin to "TPWS" in the UK)
  • ATESS
(Akin to "OTMR" in the UK)
  • MESA23
    (GSM-R + French Analogue Radio)
  • Obstacle Deflectors
  • Flange Lubricators
  • Braking modifications
    (control equipment and brake blocks)
  • Further minor modifications
(fuel tanks, labelling, cab controls etc)

The modifications have been designed, installed and tested to demanding timescales with full liaison and involvement of the French equipment suppliers. The work has involved significant technical engagement with both the French approvals engineers, and with EMD, manufacturers of the locomotives.
