REFURBISHMENT OF FIRST SCOTRAIL CALEDONIAN SLEEPER FLEET
Background
ESG has been supporting EWS Railway in their contract with First Scotrail to refurbish their fleet of Caledonian sleepers comprising 53 MKIII sleepers, and 22 MKIII support vehicles. With a remit to improve the customer perception, comfort and facilities within a fixed budget. ESG has provided technical assistance directly and through suppliers to provide the various upgrades and modifications described below.
Project Overview
  • Low level Floor Lighting (LLFL) - Working closely with HMRI and in anticipation of forthcoming emerging standards, ESG has installed LLFL in all sleeper coach corridors and some of the day coaches.
  • Vanity units – The outdated sinks have been replaced with modern low maintenance streamlined bowls
  • Worktops – Using modern hardwearing materials on existing surfaces brings new colour and life to tired worn out surfaces.
  • New water boiler – On vehicles equipped with pantry’s, intelligent water boilers are fitted in place of out-dated unsafe and leaking pressure boilers.
  • Replacing some of the present seating and tables with new longitudinal leather seating that offers greater comfort and a relaxed atmosphere where people can chat, enjoy a drink and relax.
Worktops Low Level Floor Lighting
The combination of these features with newly introduced interior paints and furnishings (carpets, vinyl, blinds) shows that ESG/EWS are proving to be a tenable alternative in the rail refurbishment market.
