Background

Locomotive builder EMD has significant experience in building "Class 66" variant locomotives for individual European countries. In order to enhance the operating use of this type of locomotive, EMD contracted with ESG to assist it in creating a multi-country version of the locomotive, for operation in France, Germany and Belgium. ESG had previously been responsible for the modifications to the UK Class 66 locomotives to enable them to operate in France.

ESG skills and competencies:

  • Liaison with safety system manufacturers
  • Peer review
  • Management of on-track testing through accredited test bodies
  • Non-regression testing
  • Approvals management including preparation f required documents, e.g. Safety Files
  • Liaison with verification bodies - Notified Bodies and National Verification Bodies
  • Interface with National Safety Authorities and Infrastructure Managers (notably EPSF and RFF in France)

ESG has also carried out similar work for other vehicle designers, builders, including:

  • Technical advice and review of French safety system designs for VOITH Gravita 10 locomotives
  • Technical support and approvals management for authorisation of UK wagons in France
